When most people think of a degree in theology or religion, the mind automatically goes to one who is looking to make a living within the walls of a church as a priest, pastor, minister, or member of the clergy. While this is one of the options students have when obtaining a theology degree, it is far from their only avenue of employment.

Becoming an educator is another way graduates can utilize a theology degree. With a master’s degree in theology, for example, you may be able to become a teacher in a private religious school, whether it be elementary, middle, or high school level. And those with a Ph.D. in ministry or theology may find themselves teaching courses in Religion, Christian Education, and even Philosophy at the college level.

Working as a professional writer or journalist is another avenue for those with a degree in theology or religion. While students may not feel up to the task of writing the next great religious novel, there are many religious publications to write for.

Helping to make the world better for others is another way theology degree holders can find employment. Many courses taken while obtaining a theology degree emphasize helping others and being compassionate, which are excellent qualities for those who are social workers, counselors, and therapists. Others may turn to charity work, organizing fundraisers, or serving as volunteer recruiters for non-profit organizations.

Methodology

Using data found at the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), Niche, individual school websites, and other sources, we first considered schools based on tuition costs. All are under $35,000 annually for in-state residents. However, it should be noted that many Christian colleges charge the same or similar amounts for non-resident students. Schools in this ranking also had to have online courses in religion, the bible, or theology.

We also consulted our own ranking of the top 100 best online colleges while researching information for this article.
