Top 50 Hispanic Serving Institutions

For Hispanic students, attending a school that is welcoming of their ethnicity and culture can be critical criteria — for both distance learning students and traditional on-campus students — and, due  to this, we have ranked the very best online schools particularly for Hispanic and Latina students.

Each of the schools we ranked are what is known as a Hispanic-Serving Institute (HSI) which is a higher education providing institute that participates in a federally-funded program that is designed at its core to assist colleges or universities operating in the United States that attempt to help first generation, majority low-income Hispanic and Latina students.

For an institute to be considered an HSI, it must satisfy the following criteria:

  • The college or university can not be a for-profit institution;
  • The college or university must offer at least a two-year academic program that will lead to a degree upon completion;
  • The college or university must be accredited by an accrediting body that is recognized by the Department of Education;
  • The college or university must have a high enrollment of students who demonstrate financial need or come from families with poverty level income and;
  • The college or university must have a minimum of a 25% Hispanic and Latina undergraduate full-time-equivalent student enrollment count.

Methodology:

We ranked schools based on the following criteria:

  • 50%: Student Retention Rates
  • 50%: Student Graduation Rates

We used these criteria to find the best schools possible and then compared our results against the HACU’s list of 269 Member Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) to find the best schools for Hispanic students.

The resources utilized in this ranking are HACU’s list for which schools are an HSI, NCES’ and U.S. News and World Report’s databases for each school’s retention rates and graduation rates.
