If you have a thirst for learning and find that a master’s degree in education simply isn’t quenching that thirst, a Ph.D. in education could be just what the doctor ordered.

While a master’s in education will prepare you with all the skills you need to be an effective classroom leader, a Ph.D. will let you take your career to the next level. Plenty of options will open themselves up to you, too—not only will you be eligible for employment as a college professor, but you could also conduct research or become a school administrator.

Admissions Requirements for a Ph.D. in Education

If you’re interested in pursuing an online Ph.D. in education, you’ll need to meet a few basic requirements. These can vary slightly between universities and individual programs, but usually, you’ll need to have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Sometimes, you may also be required to have earned a master’s degree, too. You might be asked to submit evidence of experience in classroom teaching or other relevant leadership experiences. Often, a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher is required, too, as are GRE or MAT scores.

When in doubt, it’s best to contact the admissions department at your school of choice. They will be the best resource when it comes to the required materials and application deadlines.

What Are the Best Education Degrees?

Online College Plan uses data from the National Center for Education Statistics to determine the best programs. We factor in how robust the school’s online education is, how well that school delivers on its promises, how affordable the program is, and how selective the school is as a whole. For more information, see our methodology page.

What Can I Do With a Ph.D. in Education?

Earn a Ph.D. in education, and you’ll be on your way to one of the most respected and recognized credentials in education. It’s a terminal degree, meaning it’s the highest level of achievement in the field.

You’ll be qualified for a variety of jobs in both the public and private sectors. You can publish your work in professional journals, present at conferences, become a school administrator, and much, much more.

This is because a Ph.D. in education will teach you all the skills you need not only to inspire others but to use research-based methods to solve common problems in the field. You’ll have all the tools necessary to conduct research and develop cutting-edge solutions in areas you are passionate about, plus you can use those skills to manage and lead a team to success.

Whether you plan on working in a school setting, a leadership role, or in research or higher education, a Ph.D. in education will give you credibility and unlimited upward mobility in your career.

What Are Some Specialization Tracks I Can Pursue?

One of the biggest advantages of pursuing an online Ph.D. in education is that you will be able to pursue a variety of specialization tracks. Through these specialty areas, you can hone your skills and delve deeper into an area of interest.

Master’s degrees generally allow you to do this, too—but typically not at the depth and breadth you would like. When you begin a Ph.D. in education, you’ll be able to gain mastery in topics like teacher leadership, curriculum and instruction, reading and literacy, special education, and many other fields.

Can I Complete My Ph.D. in Education Entirely Online?

In many cases, you can earn a Ph.D. in education entirely online—with no visits to campus required. You will enjoy the convenience of virtual live classes and asynchronous learning activities, along with the affordability and flexibility that only an online degree can provide.

Some programs may require you to attend campus for brief residencies or orientations, but all other fieldwork can generally be completed at a location near you.

Do I Need Classroom Experience?

It depends. Most programs require some degree of experience, whether that’s three years of working specifically in a K-12 classroom or just five years’ worth of work experience in general.

But if you don’t have any work experience that’s worth writing home about, don’t panic! Often, things like internships, practical experiences, and even volunteer work can count toward universities’ requirements for hands-on work.

Is Financial Aid Available?

If you’re worried that the cost of a Ph.D. in education will break the bank, don’t be. Prospective students have access to an abundance of financial aid resources. Usually, you’ll be eligible for funding from a variety of sources, including scholarships, student loans, fellowships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships.

Plus, you can rest assured that paying off your college education won’t be difficult. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, education administrators brought home an average annual salary of $97,640 in 2017.

Does My Education Degree Need to Be Accredited?

If you’re thinking you can save a bit of money by pursuing a Ph.D. in Education from a school that is not accredited, make sure you weigh your other options first.

Many people overlook accreditation when it comes to online programs, but this is a mistake. You need to make sure that the program in which you are interested is accredited with your state’s Department of Education. That way, you can make sure your degree will be accepted for your teaching or administrative certificate (if that’s the type of career you are interested in).

Even if you don’t plan on working in a school setting, accreditation is important. It will give you the ability to transfer credits to another university if you decide to change schools, and accreditation also impacts the availability of state and federal financial aid.

Don’t forget about the higher quality of education you’ll receive with an accredited online program, too!
